Many people may think they are the same type of crab, but in fact, they are not.
Snow crab belongs to the family Oregoniidae, while king crab belongs to the infraorder Anomura, family Lithodidae, making it closer to hermit crabs. This difference also leads to distinct appearances: snow crabs have 10 legs, whereas king crabs have 8. Next time you see a crab, you might be able to tell the difference right away.

Snow crab is known for its delicate and sweet flavor. Among shellfish, its meat is especially tender and rich in taste. Crab miso (tomalley) is another highlight, allowing you to savor the full umami of the crab.
On the other hand, king crab may taste slightly milder compared to snow crab, but its legs are thick and meaty, with a firm, satisfying texture that makes it very filling.

On average, snow crab is said to cost around 4,000 to 5,000 yen per kilogram. King crab, on the other hand, is about 16,800 yen for 1.5 kilograms, making it more expensive than snow crab.
Still, both are ingredients that are enjoyed on special occasions.
