Hold the Spoon with Three Fingers Below

When a shared-type salad is brought to the table, it’s basic etiquette for the host to serve. Now, let’s try the serving method using a spoon and fork, just like restaurant staff do.

Start with how to hold the spoon and fork. Take the spoon in your dominant hand, support it by sandwiching it between your middle finger and pinky, with the ring finger resting on top. Lightly place your index finger on the handle of the spoon, as shown in the photo.
Hold the Fork with Your Index Finger and Thumb

Next, use your remaining thumb and index finger to hold the fork. The spoon goes underneath so that it can scoop up dressing or soup. There’s no strict rule about which utensil should be on top. In the case of pasta, it’s better to flip the fork over when holding it.
Use the Three Fingers Below to Serve

Let’s start serving the salad. Move the three fingers supporting the spoon to scoop. The upper fork just needs to stay in place—it doesn’t need to move. It’s easier than it looks if you think of it like using chopsticks!

Of course, always start serving from the guests. Make sure the portions are evenly distributed.
Save Large Ingredients for Last

Chunky ingredients like bacon or olives should be placed last, on top or around the salad. This helps keep the plate neat and well-presented.
Finish with Toppings!

If the salad comes with a poached egg, break it in the bowl beforehand and gently place it on top of the salad. Paying attention to the toppings on each plate is the final touch!
Now you’re a serving pro! Give it a try right away.
