How to Cut an Orange into a Beautiful Fruit Cup – Easy & Impressive!
Have you ever thought about the best way to enjoy an orange? Most people either cut it into wedges with a knife or peel it by hand and eat it like a mandarin. But when you eat it that way, the thin membranes get in the way and keep you from fully tasting the orange’s natural sweetness and juiciness. This time, we learned a fun and visually appealing way to cut an orange into a cup shape from fruit cutting designer Sawako Nashimizu!

Cut in Half

First, cut the orange in half. When doing this, slice by pulling the knife gently. In Japan, the most common types of oranges are the tart Valencia and the sweeter Navel. For this guide, we used a Navel orange.

By the way, make sure to cut with the stem positioned sideways. If you get this cross-section, you’re on the right track!
Cut the Bottom

Next, cut the bottom of the halved orange. This part will become the base of the cup for serving.
Separate the Flesh from the Peel

Insert the knife blade between the flesh and the peel, and cut around the orange while rotating it.

Be sure to keep the knife parallel to the cutting board as you go. Advanced tip: try to leave as little pith as possible on the orange flesh!
Assemble the Cup

Once the base of the cup is ready, it’s time to assemble everything.

Take the piece you cut in Step 2 and insert it into the ring-shaped peel.
Roughly Chop the Flesh

Roughly chop the orange flesh. Try to cut it so that the surface area is large—this way, the juicy pulp will burst in your mouth for full flavor enjoyment.

Be sure to remove the center part where there’s a lot of pith.
Decorate

Once all the flesh is cut, decorate it nicely and you’re done!

Decorate with mint or blueberries for a restaurant-quality presentation.
If you can show off this cutting method at a home party, you’re sure to be the center of attention! It’s a simple technique, so give it a try!
