Have you ever thought about the best way to enjoy an orange? Most people either cut it into wedges with a knife or peel it by hand and eat it like a mandarin. But when you eat it that way, the thin membranes get in the way and keep you from fully tasting the orange’s natural sweetness and juiciness. This time, we learned a fun and visually appealing way to cut an orange into a cup shape from fruit cutting designer Sawako Nashimizu!

Cut in Half

Cut in Half

First, cut the orange in half. When doing this, slice by pulling the knife gently. In Japan, the most common types of oranges are the tart Valencia and the sweeter Navel. For this guide, we used a Navel orange.

Cut with the stem sidewaysThis cross-section means you did it right!

By the way, make sure to cut with the stem positioned sideways. If you get this cross-section, you’re on the right track!

Cut the Bottom

Next, cut the bottom of the halved orange. This part will become the base of the cup for serving.

Separate the Flesh from the Peel

Insert the knife blade between the flesh and the peel, and cut around the orange while rotating it.

Keep the knife parallel to the cutting board

Be sure to keep the knife parallel to the cutting board as you go. Advanced tip: try to leave as little pith as possible on the orange flesh!

Assemble the Cup

Once the base of the cup is ready, it’s time to assemble everything.

Remove the center part with lots of pith

Be sure to remove the center part where there’s a lot of pith.

Once all the flesh is cut, decorate it nicely and you’re done!
