How to eat spice curry | Okubo Tokyo spice curry ROKA
There are various styles of spice curry depending on the person who makes it and the restaurant where it is served. We asked Eri Saito, owner of SPICY CURRY ROKO in Okubo, Tokyo, a popular restaurant with a long line of customers on a waiting list, to show us the basic way to enjoy the unique flavor at any location!

Enjoy the aroma
Curry and lu ro han (minced pork rice) are served on one plate at SPICY CURRY ROKA. A boiled egg, onion achar, takana (mustard greens) seasoned with mustard oil, daily side dishes and salad are also served together. When the food arrives, take a moment to enjoy the aroma of the spices and broth before eating. The aroma of garam masala fills your senses.
Enjoy the curry and rice together
Next, enjoy mixing the curry and the rice. The spicy and tangy flavor is simply delicious. Top your second bite with onion achar, an Indian-style pickle. The texture and refreshing sourness of the onions make the spiciness a little milder.
Enjoy with lu ro han
Now we move on to the lu ro han. Loosen the boiled egg and enjoy it with the pork and rice. After that, try to put some takana on the rice. The sweet and spicy pork goes well with the saltiness of the takana.
Mix it all together
Once you’ve tasted the curry and the lu ro han separately, mix it all together to finish it off! This is what Saito tells her customers when she serves the dish. Combining all the flavors allows the umami to multiply and the richness of the dish to reach the next level.
Customize to your liking
It is also fun to create your own unique taste by adding achar or sprinkling spicy powder to your liking. The more you mix and match the different flavors, the more the complex layers of flavors will transform into a wonderful taste experience that keeps you coming back for more!
After finishing, try some fennel, a type of herb. Its refreshing flavor spreads along with its sweetness, making it a perfect palate freshener. It mellows out the lingering spiciness, so hopefully this will be the perfect ending to your spice curry experience!
